Davey Plastering (Gainsborough & Scunthorpe):
Lime Plaster as a Tradition...

Lime plaster has been in use since before roman times and up to about 70 years ago when the nature of building changed.

Traditional Lime plaster usually consists of Lime (putty or hydraulic) sand and water. It can (in some cases must) contain hair be it horse or goat. It is softer and more flexible than cement or modern gypsum plasters and because of its nature “breathes”. This allows moisture that would be trapped in brick or stonework to move to the surface and evaporate. Also moisture on the surface is absorbed and allowed to evaporate thus being a more pleasant and healthy atmosphere. Since modern techniques of plastering and rendering overtook the use of lime, builders and plasterers tend to use what they know in an effort to cure problems such as damp or ageing walls. The problem is that sand and cement or gypsum plasters are not really suitable for older buildings and can cause as many problems as they cure.

The internet is full of studies as to why and how this happens and if you are interested in lime as a product it is worth spending time reading some of these especially if you have an older building and are thinking of investing time and money either renewing existing lime plaster / render or taking off what someone thought would cure a problem and restoring it sympathetically.

COVID 19 SAFETY NOTICE

While in the government’s recent announcement, trades are still allowed into people’s properties to both price and work we know people still have justified concerns regarding the transmission of Covid 19.

To address this we are quite happy to respect social distancing measures. To estimate we can look around alone as long as we have an idea of what it is you want us to do. As an alternative we can go around with the client allowing a 2 meter distance. We will of course wear a mask for safety.

It’s however you feel most comfortable. Just let us know and if you’d prefer to wait until this situation is clear we’ll be here when you are ready. Be safe and well.
